Convergence Revealed!
Convergence is the merging of voice and data technologies to accomplish specific telecommunication goals.  Typically these goals are financial in nature with the benefit of increased functionality and efficiency.  Some of these technologies include:

Voice over IP - Backbone

Voice over IP - PBX

Voice over Frame-Relay

Unified Messaging

Server based PBX

The following examples help to explain these technologies, illustrate methods of implementation, and define what business objectives can be met.

Example 1:

Objectives:

Reduction or elimination of long distance charges for inter-office calling.  Make inter-office calling easier to enhance communication within the organization.

Situation:

Both offices are currently using phone systems.  There is a Frame-Relay private network in place.  Long Distance usage is 10,000 minutes per month between offices at $0.07 per minute.

Solution:

Utilize the frame relay network to route calls between offices by equipping the existing frame relay router with facilities to connect the phone systems.  This results in the elimination of long distance charges for communication between offices.

Example 2:

Objectives:

Purchase a new voice communications system.  Take advantage of the most up-to-date technology.  Make administration as easy as possible.  Provide for home office users.

Situation:

The corporate office and the home office both have internet access.  The employer would like to offer the option of telecommuting because the home office user can be just as productive at home as at the corporate office.

Solution:

Install a Voice Over IP-PBX.  Using Internet Protocol as the means of connectivity to the corporate phone system makes voice communications simple and extremely flexible. Because all call routing functions are associated with the IP phone, all extension specific programming follows the IP phone making moves and changes Plug And Play.

Example 3:

Objectives:

Increase employee productivity by providing a convenient method of retrieving voice mail messages, email and faxes from a single location.

Situation:

Employees must call into voice mail to retrieve voice mail messages.  Employees have to obtain internet connectivity to retrieve email messages.  Office personnel hand deliver paper faxes to employees.

Solution:

Deploy a unified messaging server and a fax server that will integrate with your email client. Employees can now receive multimedia voice mail and faxes through their existing email service.  Furthermore, the unified messaging system can read emails, play voice mail messages and instruct the unified messaging system to send faxes anywhere, thus increasing productivity and convenience for traveling employees as well as office personnel.
